A new era in paediatric first-aid?

All new nursery workers could soon be made to undergo paediatric first-aid training, in an effort to reassure parents that their children are safe.

The government has launched a consultation outlining plans to make it compulsory for all newly qualified Level 2 and Level 3 early-years staff to hold either a full Paediatric First Aid (PFA) or an emergency PFA certificate if they are to count towards adult-child ratios under the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Current rules state merely that early years providers must have at least one paediatric first-aider available on the premises at any given time.

The consultation document states:

“Following the tragic death in 2012 of Millie Thompson in a nursery class, the coroner for the case wrote to the Secretary of State stating that all nursery staff should have PFA training. The Government wants to take account of the coroner’s report, subsequently the subject of a 103,000-signature petition which lobbied for all nursery staff to have PFA training, a Parliamentary debate on the issue and a review by the Department for Education of the current requirements. The review has shown that parents would welcome additional reassurance that their children are safe through more staff being trained in PFA.”

If given the green light, the plans will come into force in September 2016. Pre-school Learning Alliance chief executive Neil Leitch welcomed the proposals.

He said: “The safety and well-being of children should always, without exception, be at the centre of quality early-years provision.

“We look forward to working with the Department for Education to ensure that the details of these requirements are fully thought through, that they are based on the best interests of the child and, crucially, that providers are adequately supported in implementing them.”

Nursery World reported in March that the new emergency first-aid training course would be equivalent to one day’s training, with a requirement to attend a refresher course every three years.

Many training providers, including Saracen Solutions, offer qualifications in paediatric first-aid. Click here to learn more about our courses.
